The family of a 14-year-old student who died shortly after enrolling at Abomosu STEM Senior High School in Ghana’s Eastern Region is demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death. Master Daniel Boateng Mintah reportedly died on September 30, 2026, nearly two weeks after arriving at the school on September 18. The family emphasized that Daniel died barely two weeks after reporting to the school, highlighting their concerns about the rapid progression of events and unresolved questions surrounding his demise.
School Communication and Medical Treatment
Speaking to the media at their Community 25-Dawhenya residence, his mother, Madam Joyce Mintah, said the family received a call that day informing them that Daniel was unwell and needed treatment for suspected malaria. She said they were asked to provide his National Health Insurance details and later send GH¢50 for an injection. Despite multiple attempts to get updates on Daniel’s condition, family members could not reach the individuals who had contacted them.
Later, a caller identifying himself as the school’s headmaster reportedly urged the family to come to the school urgently. Upon arrival, the family was redirected to Kwabeng Hospital, where hospital staff informed them that Daniel had died. They had expected to receive further information about Daniel’s condition and the medical attention he received before his death.
Mortuary Findings and Medication Concerns
When the family visited Daniel’s body at the mortuary, his father and sister observed blood around his face and noted injuries or dressings on parts of his body. His elder sister, a nurse, expressed the family’s desire for a clear explanation of what happened before his death. The family also discovered medication, including carbamazepine and olanzapine, among Daniel’s belongings provided by the school. Unaware of any prior psychiatric treatment, they questioned why these drugs were present and whether they were linked to his death. The family was yet to determine how the medication got into his belongings or if it was connected to his passing.
Public and Official Calls for Investigation
Daniel’s former teacher, Mr. Ricky Kwabena Godigah, an Assistant Headmaster of Richenfel Academy at Dawhenya, Tema Community 25, has also called for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. The family has appealed to Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu to intervene and ensure the matter is investigated. They have also requested Daniel’s body be transferred to the Police Hospital in Accra to facilitate further inquiries into the cause of death. The family described Daniel as a determined boy passionate about computers and eager to make his family proud.
